We are pleased to announce the official kick off of the
2013-2014 Building Blocks
campaign! Year after year, Selwyn families have collaborated to make Building Blocks a huge success and the impact has been felt everywhere from the classroom to the playground. No other fundraiser in CMS achieves near the same outcomes or has the lasting impact as Building Blocks.
Campaign extended through March 21st!
of Building Blocks is to make capital improvements to the school and invest in durable goods that will further enrich the learning experience.
Over 40 local companies have
matching gift programs
that can double the impact of your gift.
No contribution amount is too small.
Gifts are confidential
- individual giving amounts will never be published.
The goal for this year’s campaign is to achieve
51% family participation
. Every dollar matters!
You can elect to have a portion of your gift designated for
Billingsville Leadership Academy
– Selwyn’s Schoolmates partner.
on Building Blocks purchases are made by a
committee of Selwyn teachers and staff
Friends, neighbors and relatives are welcome
and encouraged to participate. Just include donor’s name, address and gift amount so we can acknowledge the gift.

The impact of Building Blocks is felt far and wide across the entire school. Building Blocks is a critical source of funding for important classroom equipment and instructional resources for our children. These resources include things like technology teaching aids (i.e. Smartboards, iPads, etc.), supplemental curriculum and learning guides, state of the art playground equipment, school safety improvements and even janitorial items such as vacuums. Every dollar is valued and no gift is too small.

Who Represents Me?
Many changes have taken place this year for our NC public schools - assistant cutbacks, teacher pay challenges, and the Read to Achieve initiative. Please keep in my mind these changes are at the state level, not county. If you would like to voice your opinion, please click

Campaign To Raise NC Teacher Pay
North Carolina is in serious danger of losing our best teachers to other states or even to other professions because of low salaries. NC ranks 46th in the nation in teacher pay, with an average salary nearly $10,000 lower than the national average. Former Gov. Jim Hunt has released a plan to get NC to the national average for teacher salaries in four years. AimHigher NC has launched a petition to support that plan. Sign the petition at
today calling on the legislature to get behind this plan.
Rising 6th Graders
Rising 6th graders are invited to tour AG Middle School. While students see the school and ask questions, parents will visit with AG faculty. After School Clubs
Selwyn offers students a wonderful variety of after school programs through several local organizations. These programs, while beneficial to Selwyn students and parents, are not PTA sponsored (with the exception of Chess Club). This information is being provided as a convenience, and all registration, activities, and scheduling are handled directly by these organizations without any PTA involvement. Please also note that some after school programs have sent home paper fliers in addition to or in lieu of an entry here.
Afternoon Transportation Changes
Due to the volume of afternoon transportation changes submitted on a daily basis and our concern for student safety, the transportation policy is as follows:
Afternoon transportation changes must be submitted in writing (no emails, no phone calls) on the morning of the change.
The handwritten note must include the date for the change, student's first and last name, teacher's name and mode of afternoon transportation.
Parents may come into the office to submit a change prior to 2:00 pm.
A complete overview of all transportation and dismissal policies and procedures will be forthcoming from the administration.
If you plan to pick up your child early, arrive early to allow office staff time to locate the class and your child.
Students are called to the office upon the parent's arrival. Parents may
call ahead to have a student dismissed from class prior to the parent's arrival.
You may communicate, to the teacher in advance, your plans for an early dismissal, and the teacher will make every attempt to have your child ready upon your arrival.
Parents must arrive to pick up their child prior to 2:00 pm to avoid disruptions to the routine dismissal procedures.
A complete overview of all transportation and dismissal policies and procedures will be forthcoming from the administration.
Give with Target: Vote for Selwyn
This year, Target will give money to schools all over the country for one simple act: a vote. Our school needs just 25 votes to earn a $25 donation from Target. But that's only the beginning. For each additional vote, our school will get $1 more. So please remember that, although the gesture is small, the rewards are potentially huge. Go to
to vote for Selwyn Elementary School and our partner school, Billingsville Elementary, once a week through September 21 or until Target has given away all $5 million. And please forward this email to your friends. Vote and see rules at
